Epilogue

The perfect dark of night was brightened only by the glittering stars shining deftly through the dark-on-dark trees. In the daylight, one could see the beginnings of red and gold and brown on the edging the deep, rich green leaves of the oaks, maples and beech that surrounded the scene, but in the night, everything was indiscriminantly black. Everything that is, except for a head of platinum blonde hair that seemed to catch the starlight or glow from some internal light source.

Zechs sat on the roof and gazed at the connect-the-dot sky. He remembered being among those stars so well, he could almost place himself there. He wondered if Treize could see the stars from where he was now.

The tall European no longer felt the stabbing pains of guilt and agony that he once had at the mere though of his late lover's name. What was important, though, was that the transition didn't happen over night. One last time with his Treize, one last chance to say goodbye, while being wonder (to say the least) did not ease the pain of losing him.

Blonde strands fluttered into his vision as Zechs sighed and rested his head in the palms of his head. He had someone new now. He had Duo. Zechs loved Duo with all his heart. He could sense the love of his partner as well and he knew that they would be together, dispite their squabbles and differences, until Fate, with her vindictive sissors, cut them apart. Then he knew he would spend his eternities with Treize and Duo together. It would be the perfect world.

But for some reason, that just wasn't good enough. He was here, he was alive, he was human right then and there. And because he was human, Zechs wanted everything. He wanted both of his lovers alive and well and in his bed. He wanted to sleep inbetween them at night. He wanted a family.

And there was Reason, dreaded though she was, to tell him that no, he couldn't have it all. He should be ashamed for even asking. Most people weren't nearly as fortunate as he was.

It was at these moments, in the dead of nights where there was no moon that Zechs felt closest to knowing who he was meant to be. He could feel his true personality pushing at the confines of his skin, itching to come out, sometimes pounding, sometimes raging, but there: so close, yet unreachable. So unreachable, in fact, that Zechs had all but given up reaching. He was content. Ish.

Zechs had come to terms with his new life, as he had come to terms with his last ones. He was older now, much older than he had been when he fought to destroy earth to save earth. Many things had come to pass since then. He had buckled up his flightsuit and strapped himself into Tallgeese III for one last battle before casting it into the sun. He had done what was right, at Duo's urging, and joined Preventors. Lady Une was changed, too. Where there had been only contempt before, there was friendship. Zechs still did not believe that Mariemia was Treize's daughter, but that was not his business. Nor did it matter.

What mattered was the lithe man with the chestnut braid that was climbing out of the upstairs window onto the roof. Zechs heard him coming, but did not look his way. Duo sidled over and sank down next to Zechs. "Ya missing him?" Duo asked, his voice barely audible over the music of the night creatures.

Zechs didn't answer at first. He didn't know the answer at first. He just stared into space and counted the stars. Duo knew enough of his lover to know that he was thinking. One thing he loved about Zechs (well, one of many) was that he never spoke without thinking it through first. Duo loved how the blonde's thoughfullness complemented his own rash nature.

"No." Zechs said after a while. "I am not missing him. I don't need to miss him anymore."

Duo smiled in the darkness. That was what he had been waiting for. Zechs had found himself. Duo pulled his Zechs over to him and they made love on the roof of their two story stucco house out in the French countryside. And Treize watched them, smiling.

The End
