Duo woke up facing a beautiful back and a cascade of platinum hair. He looked over the shoulder to see large red numbers reading 6:19. Man, why can't I sleep till the alarm? He lay there awake for about a minute until the red numbers changed and the clock made its awful noise. The blond shoulder moved to silence it. The face attached to the shoulder turned sleepily to face him. "Good morning," the lips said.
If you could see me now
I'd give you what you have stolen
If you could see me now
If you could be
If you could see me now
"Good morning." He kissed the other man. "Time to get up. Let's go." I'd never have been able to do this with Heero. I can't believe I put up with his shit.
Why are the faces hiding?
The shadows always seem so cold
When Duo arrived in class, he tried to avoid meeting Heero's eyes. Kuso. He met the Death Glare and couldn't break it until the teacher started class.
Be careful what you're finding
You feel so old
"Duo, you need to talk to him."
"No, no I don't, Quatre. I moved out. I found a better place to live. I have nothing more to do with him."
The small blond was quiet. "No, you should talk to him. He's obviously very upset."
"Come on, when have you seen him not looking upset? He's got a chip on his shoulder the size of Australia."
"And you aren't making it any better. Talk to him." He looked pleadingly into his friend's eyes. "Do it for me, please."
"Oh, all right... I'll do it for you." Man, I don't want to talk to him. Argh. But I promised Quatre. He made up his mind to confront him after class that afternoon.
If you think I cry for you
It's only 'cause you asked me to
And it all becomes so clear
You're the one to fear
"Heero. Can we talk a minute?"
"Whatever."
"Look, I'm doing this because I promised Quatre. He thinks we should talk, or something. Because of me moving out."
"I don't see why it matters. You moved out."
"I moved out because you are a selfish, arrogant bastard. You only take and take. I got sick of it. I found someone better. Someone who cares."
"Good for you."
That's it, I give up. Sorry, Quatre. I tried. He started walking away. He felt a strong hand on his arm. "Let me go, Heero."
The hand remained firm. "I'm selfish? What are you, then? You only think of what's fun, what you want to do. You don't care about other people's feelings."
"That is not true, and you know it. I did everything I could to make you happy. I held my feelings back. You never expressed emotion to me. I broke. Now I've moved on. Deal with it."
Then a tall blond senior approached. "Duo." He put his arm around the boy. "Let's go home."
Heero glared.
"Let's. This conversation is over." As they walked toward the older boy's car, Duo remembered something. "Oh, crap. I'm supposed to meet people in the library to do a project after school."
"I'll walk with you over there, then. Will you be done in time for dinner?"
"I sure hope so..."
If you could see me now
I'd tear apart what is unbroken
If you could see me now
Everything that is unspoken
If you could see me now
Duo lay in bed with his lover, resting his head on the blond's shoulder, one hand on his chest, gently stroking the nipple. Heero, I've moved on. He propped himself on his shoulder, kissed the blond's neck, and ran his fingers lightly over the nicely-muscled chest.
"Duo..." Zechs purred, turning onto his side to kiss the boy back.
"Uh-uh-uh... You stay right there," the braided boy said, pushing him back down, smiling seductively.
The blond smiled his agreement and allowed the boy to do whatever he wanted.
In class the next morning, Duo had to tell Quatre that his talk with Heero had not been productive.
"It wasn't my fault, Q. I tried. He was just being ... Heero. He wouldn't open up. So I left."
Quatre looked at his friend sadly.
"I'm sorry... I tried. I promised I'd try to talk to him. I can't help it if he wouldn't talk to me."
"I know. It's just sad."
You're watered down and empty
Pretending all is clear
So watered down and empty
You're the one you fear
Heero entered the classroom, taking his seat quietly. He looked at Quatre talking to Duo, then turned back to the front.
"He looks so sad," Quatre continued.
"How can you tell? It's not like he shows any emotions."
"I can tell. Here," he answered, pointing to his heart.
Duo just shook his head. "If you say so."
The teacher came in to start class, and Duo returned to his seat behind Heero.
I hear your stomach turning
You think that I am such a whore
At lunch, it was Heero's turn to confront Duo.
"So you moved in with Zechs, huh? What makes him so special?"
Duo glared at him and continued eating his sandwich.
"I asked you a question."
"I heard it."
"Are you going to answer it?"
"Why should I? When I was rooming with you, I couldn't tell what you wanted from me. Now you're acting like it's your business whom I sleep with?"
And the flesh I'm giving
You want more
Heero glared. "I said you were mine, dammit."
"When? When you started thinking you might lose me? When you realized I wasn't just going to take your silence anymore?"
Like a soul kept on your shelf
But you keep it there for someone else
And it all becomes so clear
You're the one you fear.
"Yeah, your silence," Duo continued. "Zechs talks to me. He has emotions, and he shows them. Novel concept, I thought. I'm with him now. Anything we had is over, Heero."
"You're right. I guess we have nothing more to say to each other." With that, Heero turned and walked away, taking a seat across the cafeteria.
Duo stared. Wow. I wonder if Quatre was right. No, Maxwell, don't think about that. You deserve better. You deserve happiness. You deserve Zechs. Whatever that meant.
If you could see me now
If you could be me
If you could see me now
I'd tear apart what is unbroken
If you could see me now
Everything that is unspoken
If you could see me now.
